What Every Houston Business Owner Should Learn About SEO
NATIONAL ONLINE LEARNING DAY
Today is National Online Learning Day. For most Houston business owners, the most useful thing to learn this year is not a new platform or a new social channel. It is what you are actually paying for when you buy marketing.
We have taught that subject since 2003, and the pattern almost never changes. An owner walks into class frustrated, convinced their website is broken. Two hours later they know which three questions to ask any vendor, and they stop overpaying almost immediately.

Most owners learned SEO from the person selling it to them
Most of what a small business owner knows about search comes from whoever was selling them search. That is not a conspiracy. It is just how the market works when a subject is technical and the buyer has no independent source.
The result is predictable. Owners buy reports they cannot read, pay for rankings on terms nobody searches, and renew year after year because canceling feels riskier than continuing. The invoice is the only number they truly understand.
Learning the basics breaks that cycle. You do not need to run your own campaigns. You need enough understanding to tell a real Houston SEO program from an expensive placeholder, and to know when a number on a report means money and when it means nothing.
Three questions that tell you if your marketing is working
Here is the shortest version of what we teach, and you can use it tomorrow.
Ask what a lead costs you today. Not traffic. Not impressions. The cost of one person who called or filled out a form. If your vendor cannot answer that, they are not measuring the thing that pays your rent.
Ask which searches actually convert. Ranking for a broad term with high volume feels good and often sells nothing. A plumber ranking for “how does a water heater work” gets students. A plumber ranking for “water heater repair near me” gets customers.
Ask whether the technical side is done. If your site is slow, if your headings are a mess, if your Google Business Profile is half filled out, no amount of content fixes it. The foundation comes first and it is the part most vendors skip because clients cannot see it.
Why technical SEO decides whether AI engines see you
This is the part that changed in the last two years, and it is why our September class is built around it.
Your customers increasingly ask an AI engine before they ask Google. They type a full sentence, get one answer, and act on it. If your business is not in that answer, you were not outranked. You were never considered.
What decides whether an AI engine can use your business is mostly technical. Can it read your pages. Does your site say the same name, address and phone as every directory. Is your content structured so a machine can lift a clean answer out of it. Small businesses can win here, because the technical bar is lower than the advertising budget bar.
We wrote more about the practical side of this in using ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini for real world visibility, and it is the backbone of the class below.
Our next free class: Wednesday, September 30
Why Strong Technical SEO Skills Matter for AI Visibility and Winning AI Listings for Your Business
Wednesday, September 30, 2026. 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Online. No charge.
Taught by Beth Guide and Sandra Louvier. Two hours, with real time set aside for open discussion so you can ask about your own business rather than a generic example.
Beth has taught digital marketing for the SBA, the University of Houston SBDC, Lone Star College and HCC. You can read more about Beth Guide if you want to know who is doing the teaching before you sign up.
Save your seat here: register for the September 30 Digital Marketing Clinic.
What the September 30 class covers
- Technical SEO requirements for AI visibility
- Local search engine optimization and the map pack
- Convertible keywords and the sales strategy behind them
- Web design and site structure that engines can actually read
- Social media and video, and where each one genuinely helps
- Analytics and conversion management, so you can see what worked
- Open discussion, where you ask about your own business
What two hours actually gets you
Two hours will not make you an SEO. That is not the goal. The goal is that you stop buying things you cannot evaluate.
Owners who take the class negotiate better. They ask harder questions. They waste less money, including with us, and we are fine with that. An informed client is a better client, and they stay longer because they can see what they are getting.
If you cannot make September 30, our on demand SEO classes cover the fundamentals on your own schedule, and the full Internet Marketing Clinic class schedule lists what is coming next.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. It is a free two hour online session hosted through HCC. There is no cost and no sales requirement. Register at hcc.idloom.events/DMCSept30.
No. The class is built for small business owners and entrepreneurs, not for marketers. We explain the technical side in plain language and leave time for questions about your own site.
AI visibility means AI engines can find, read and cite your business when someone asks them a question. It matters because a growing share of customers ask an AI engine before they open a search results page, and if your site is not readable to those engines you are never considered.
It overlaps heavily. Clean technical setup, accurate business information and clearly structured content help both. The difference is that AI engines lift a single answer rather than listing ten links, so being the clearest source on a specific question matters more.
For most Houston small businesses, meaningful movement takes 3 to 6 months, and competitive terms take longer. Anyone promising faster than that is either working in a very small niche or is not telling you the whole story.
Yes. Request a free website audit and we will tell you what we find, whether or not you ever hire us. Many owners bring their audit to class and ask about it during open discussion.
