Law firm marketing is a different animal. Legal keywords carry some of the highest costs per click in all of Google Ads, and the firms you compete with spend accordingly. A page that would rank a bakery on a Saturday afternoon will not move the needle for a personal injury firm. That is not a reason to give up on search. It is a reason to do it right, in the right order, with people who have done it before.
Vertical Web has built and marketed websites since 1998, and Beth Guide has taught SEO since 2003. We handle the marketing side of your firm, and our law firm website design team handles the site itself, so nobody is pointing at another vendor when something needs fixing. Start with a free website analysis and we will show you exactly where your firm stands today.
THE OUTCOME
What does winning look like for a law firm online?
Winning is not a vanity ranking. It is a steady flow of calls from people with the kind of case you want, in the counties you practice in, who trust you before they dial.
Your firm shows up in the Google map pack when someone nearby searches for your practice area. Your practice-area pages rank for the specific problems you solve. When someone asks Google or ChatGPT who the best attorney near them is for that problem, your name is in the answer. Your reviews read like case descriptions, not generic thank-you notes. And when the visitor lands on your site, the page asks for the consultation instead of just describing the law.
We measure the whole chain. Impressions show where Google is testing you, clicks show whether you are on page 1, and calls show whether the page did its job.
HOW CLIENTS SEARCH
How do people actually find a lawyer today?
Nobody searches for your firm name unless they already know you. They search for the problem. One person types “personal injury lawyer.” The next types “attorney” or “car accident lawyer near me” or “how long do I have to file after a wreck.”
Three things happen on the results page. For most local legal searches Google shows a map pack of 3 firms first, and that 3 pack takes the large majority of the clicks. Below it sit the organic results. And the moment the search turns into a question, Google now answers it with AI first. In AI mode Google reads dozens of sites and names a handful of firms it decides are the best fit. People assume that list is vetted. It is not. It is built from what is written on your site, your reviews and your listings.
One more Houston factor: because this region has such a large Spanish-speaking population, Google returns Spanish-language pages directly here. Personal injury and traffic ticket firms we work with have Spanish versions of their key pages for that reason. Our AI search optimization and local SEO for Houston businesses cover every one of these doors, because visibility in one does not guarantee visibility in the others.

THE PLAN
What should a law firm marketing plan include?
Every marketing effort we run for a firm follows the same order, because each piece feeds the next.
- The list. Every practice area and every county and city you want cases from. Most firms have never written it down.
- The website, built on that outline. One page per practice area and a county and city hierarchy grouped the way Houston actually works: Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, Galveston, suburbs underneath. Google reads that structure and understands where you are and what you do.
- Google Business Profile. Right categories, an honest service area and your own photos, so you earn the local search result, not just the organic one.
- Reviews that describe the case, asked for consistently.
- Content with consistency. Pages and posts that state your law school, your years in practice and the cases you handle, published on a schedule, not in a burst.
- Paid search where the cost per signed case works, and nowhere else.
- An email newsletter to past clients and referral sources, because referrals still sign cases.
- Measurement. Google Analytics, Google Search Console and call tracking tell us which step produced the call.
Our SEO services follow this sequence for every client. The law firm version just faces more competition and more zeros on the keywords.
MISTAKES WE SEE
Why is my law firm not showing up in Google?
When a firm calls us about a site that is not producing, the problem is almost always one of these.
- The site is too small. A 10 page website does not rank for a competitive legal term, no matter how local you are. The pages that win personal injury terms often run several thousand words with dozens of supporting pages.
- One page tries to do everything. Divorce, child custody, DWI and probate all on one “Practice Areas” page tells Google you are an expert in nothing. Each of those is a separate search with separate intent and needs its own page.
- Generic or AI-written content. AI tools aggregate what is already on the web, including your competitors. The result is content Google has seen before and has no reason to rank. Use AI to outline and research, not to write your pages for you.
- Reviews that say nothing. “Great lawyer, thanks” does not help. “She handled my divorce and child support case” tells Google what you do. The words in your reviews shape what Google thinks your firm is about.
- A profile that overreaches. Drawing a Google Business Profile service area across the entire Houston region when you work out of one office does not fool anyone. Google knows you are not driving 189 miles a day.
- Nobody asked for the call. Many law firm pages explain the law beautifully and never ask the visitor to schedule a consultation. That is an audit finding, not a finished page.
If your site has any of these, our website repair and recovery team fixes the structure and the content before we spend a dollar promoting it.

ADVERTISING RULES
How do we market a law firm without crossing the line on attorney advertising?
Attorneys work under advertising and solicitation rules that most industries never think about. We are not lawyers and we do not give legal advice on those rules. What we do is build a review step into every piece of marketing we produce for a firm, so your compliance person signs off before anything goes live.
In practice that means we avoid comparative claims we cannot support, we never promise outcomes, we keep testimonials factual, and we leave room for whatever disclaimers your firm requires. Our writers already work from a “you can’t say this” sheet for regulated clients; for a law firm that sheet gets longer, and we follow it.
Compliance and marketing are not enemies. Stating plainly where you went to law school and how long you have practiced is what Google and AI engines want to see, and any firm can say it.
COST AND ROI
How much does law firm marketing cost in Houston?
We will give you the honest answer most agencies dodge. Law firm marketing costs more than marketing for most local businesses, because the competition is different. In competitive practice areas you are up against firms spending tens of thousands of dollars a month, and a small budget will not get you into that fight. The right number depends on your practice area, your counties and how fast you need cases, and we put it in writing after we look at your market, not before.
Paid search is where the cost shows up most clearly. We manage more than $1M a year in PPC across our clients, so we know what a legal click costs and, more importantly, what a signed case costs once you work the math backwards. We show you that math before you spend.
The question is never “is SEO expensive” but “what does a case cost me this way versus that way.” Organic search costs more up front and less per case over time. Paid search costs more per case and produces on day 1. Most firms need some of both. Our PPC management team runs the paid side with that trade-off in mind.
WHY VERTICAL WEB
Why should a law firm choose Vertical Web over a legal marketing company?
Hire the people other marketers learn from. Beth Guide has taught SEO since 2003 for the SBA, the University of Houston SBDC, Lone Star College and HCC, and she is a technology expert on Fox 26. The agencies that cold-call your office learned this material from someone.
One accountable team. Hosting, design, development, content, SEO and paid search all sit under one roof in our Galleria and Kingwood offices. When your intake form breaks or a page drops, there is no hosting vendor blaming the web designer blaming the SEO company. There is one phone number.
Staying power. Vertical Web was founded in 1998. Our original 1998 client is still with us. We are a Certified Google Partner with a 4.9 Google rating and took First Place triple honors in Best of West Houston 2025.
Candor. Because we manage over $1M a year in PPC, we know what a lead costs in your practice area, and we will tell you when a purchase is wrong for your firm. If a small SEO plan cannot win your market, we say so before you sign. Our reputation management work earns reviews the right way, because the shortcut versions get firms in trouble. We hold ourselves to the same standard we teach every month at the Internet Marketing Clinic.
TIMING
When should a law firm start marketing, and how long does it take to work?
Start before you need the cases. Organic search for legal terms is a long game, and the firms at the top of the map pack today started building their pages years ago. Every month you wait, a competitor gets further ahead on content, reviews and links.
Paid search can start producing calls quickly, which is why we often run it while the organic foundation is being built. Google Business Profile improvements and review programs tend to show movement within a few months. Competitive practice-area rankings take longer, and anyone who promises a specific date is guessing.
We publish, measure and adjust in small steps, and you see what changed and what it did. If your firm already has a site, the fastest first step is the free website analysis. It tells us whether we are building on a foundation or starting one.
Questions
Law firm marketing: common questions
Yes. Each practice area is a different search with a different intent, and Google treats them that way. One page that lists everything you do tells Google you specialize in nothing. Separate pages also let each one carry the specific proof, FAQs and schema that practice area deserves.
You can, and some firms start that way because ads produce calls quickly. The trade-off is that legal clicks are among the most expensive in Google Ads, and the cost never goes down. Organic search costs more at the start and less per case over time. Most firms do best with both, shifting budget toward organic as it matures.
More than most firms realize. Google reads the words in your reviews to understand what your firm does, so a review that describes the case type helps more than a generic compliment. Reviews also feed the AI answers that name firms as the best choice. We never buy reviews, and we recommend you do not either; Google can tell when a reviewer was never near your office.
We write it, but it starts with you. You know the law and the cases; our writers know how to draw that out in an interview and turn it into plain-language pages that rank. Your firm reviews everything for accuracy and compliance before it goes live.
If you serve Spanish-speaking clients, almost certainly. Houston has a large enough Spanish-speaking population that Google returns Spanish pages directly here. Personal injury and traffic ticket firms in particular see real traffic from them. We build them as proper pages, not machine translations.
A free website analysis and a conversation about your practice areas, your counties and your intake process. From that we tell you what is working, what is broken, and what order to fix it in. You get an honest plan with numbers, and if we think a service is wrong for your firm, we say so.
