MARKETING FOR MANUFACTURERS AND MACHINE SHOPS
Manufacturing Marketing Agency That Turns Spec Searches Into RFQs
Engineers and procurement desks search by material, process and spec. Our marketing strategy builds the content they find, in Google and in AI search, and points every page at a request for quote.

A manufacturer does not need thousands of visitors. You need the 12 engineers this month who are specifying the exact material, tolerance or process you run, and you need them to send a request for quote instead of calling the competitor that outranked you. That is the goal, and every piece of the strategy serves it. Our SEO services for industrial companies start with how a buyer types the problem, not with how your sales team describes the business.
Most of your buyers are not local, so your website should not act like a local business. It should act like a catalog an engineer can trust, read by Google and by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. If your site was built as a brochure, we fix the structure first and pair the digital marketing with manufacturing website design that can carry a few hundred capability and material pages. Web design and SEO are one solution here, not 2 vendors.

THE OUTCOME
What does a winning manufacturing marketing strategy look like?
Winning is a steady flow of qualified RFQs from buyers you have never met. Not likes, not traffic, not a pretty homepage. A quote request from a buyer in another state who found your material page at 10 pm is the whole game. Every other goal on this page is a step toward that one.
The buyer under 35 goes to the internet long before they ask around about who to call. A referral still gets checked against your website first, and if the page does not answer the spec question, the referral dies there.
Niche manufacturers have a real advantage here. The search volume for your exact material or process is small, and the people who type it are buyers. We have a high-end plastics client whose searches look thin on a keyword report, yet they convert at an extremely high rate. The phone rings all day because of how the content is structured, and that is the value of a strategy built for the industrial buyer instead of a generic campaign.
So we measure manufacturing marketing on quotes requested, quotes won and the sales growth behind them.
WHAT TO EXPECT
What does a manufacturing marketing agency do, and what should you expect from one?
A manufacturing marketing agency has one job: turn demand that already exists into qualified leads and revenue for your company. Industrial marketing and B2B marketing are not retail marketing with bigger invoices. The industrial buyer is an engineer or a buyer with a drawing, a deadline and a boss. Everything the agency does should be built around that person, and you should expect the agency to say so in the first meeting.
Yes, we are a digital agency, and here is what that means for a manufacturer. We build and run the parts of your marketing that happen online: website content, SEO, paid campaigns, LinkedIn, email and marketing automation, and the reporting that ties it all back to sales growth.
- Visibility and online presence. Capability, material and process pages that rank in Google and get cited by AI engines. This is the engine for inbound marketing. Content marketing for a manufacturer means writing the answer to the spec question, in your own words, on your own website. The content that appeals to industrial clients is specific: spec sheets as readable text, tolerances and material properties, short case examples of a part you solved, and process videos from the floor. Reposting other people’s articles on social media does not make you the expert. Your own opinion on your own page does.
- Lead generation that filters. An RFQ form that asks for the drawing, material and quantity produces fewer leads than a “contact us” box, and almost all of them are qualified.
- LinkedIn, not Facebook. B2B belongs on LinkedIn. We have posted the same business piece to both and watched it collect dozens of shares on Facebook and not one call, then produce 2 or 3 quote calls every time it went on LinkedIn. LinkedIn is people driven, so the post goes on the owner or the sales engineer, not just the company page.
- Email, marketing automation and CRM follow-up. A 9-month sales cycle dies without follow-up. Every RFQ goes into a CRM, gets a drip sequence built around the buyer’s timeline, and gets tagged so you know which page and search produced it when the PO lands. The tools industrial marketers use are not exotic: Google Search Console and Google Analytics to see what buyers searched and read, a CRM for the pipeline, call tracking for phone quotes, and LinkedIn for the people side. We set them up and read them for you.
- Paid media with a stop-loss. Google Ads campaigns on exact material and process terms, judged in quotes, and shut off when a term does not pencil out.
- Branding that reads as capability. The industrial buyer trusts a company that looks like it holds tolerances. Clean web design, real photos of your floor, certifications where the buyer can find them. That branding matters more than a new logo.
How do you judge an agency? Ask 4 questions. Do they show real insight into how an industrial buyer searches, or do they talk in fluff? Do they report revenue and RFQs, or clicks and impressions? Is execution in-house, or farmed out to people who have never seen a production floor? And what does it cost compared to one won job? We will also say this plainly: nobody can do solid SEO at a bargain price, and an agency that promises growth for very little money is selling you a report, not results. Focus and expertise cost more than that, and they are what move the revenue line for our clients.
What we do for manufacturing
Marketing services built for manufacturers

RFQ Conversion
Quote forms that ask for the drawing, material, quantity and deadline, tracked back to the page that produced them.
Paid Search for Spec Buyers
Tight Google Ads campaigns on exact material and process terms, reported in quotes requested rather than clicks.
Reviews and Reputation
Google Business Profile setup and review follow-up so a procurement desk doing due diligence finds a verified business.
HOW BUYERS SEARCH
How do engineers and procurement buyers search for a manufacturer?
They search the way they write a drawing. Material, grade, process, tolerance, certification, quantity. An engineer does not type “best machine shop.” They type the polymer grade, the alloy, the finish, the standard they have to meet. Procurement then searches again to find 2 or 3 more suppliers to bid against you.
That changes what your content has to say. A page that talks about “pumps” gets read as plumbing pumps. A page that says industrial and hydraulic pumps, with pressure ratings and applications, gets filed with the right competitors. Give Google and the AI tools the right set of words, or they give you the wrong set of buyers. That is keyword strategy for a manufacturer.
Trade shows still matter, but a show happens 2 or 3 times a year and search happens every day a buyer has a problem. The website and the follow-up campaign close the other 11 months.
Manufacturers tell us AI search does not matter in a product space. We disagree for anything that gets specified. Buyers now ask ChatGPT to shortlist suppliers who can hold a tolerance, and our AI search optimization gets your company onto that list.
THE MISTAKES
Why is my manufacturing website not showing up in Google?
We audit industrial sites every week for prospective clients, and the same 5 problems show up.
- You rank for your name and nothing else. We ran the large competitors of an industrial construction company. They all ranked on their brand and none ranked for industrial or marine construction. A brand-only ranking is a phone book, not marketing.
- The keyword shows up at the bottom of the page, if at all. Pages written by engineers describe the equipment and never say what a buyer searches for until paragraph 9.
- The datasheets live in PDFs. Google reads a PDF poorly and AI tools read it worse. If your material data and tolerances exist only in downloads, your best content is invisible.
- The site is 8 pages. A small site is almost never the answer, even for a niche.
- One page covers 6 materials. That page competes with nothing and ranks for nothing.
All of these can be fixed, and fixing them is where a marketing strategy starts. Our guide to the website problems that quietly cost you business shows how we diagnose them, and a free website analysis tells you which ones you have.

SITE STRUCTURE
How should manufacturing website content be structured for SEO and AI search?
Structure is the first thing most industrial sites fail on, and it is where web design and SEO have to work as one solution. The fix is a silo. One top-level page per capability. Under it, a child page for each material or process you run. Under that, grandchild pages for grades, applications and certifications. Every page links up to its parent and across to its siblings, so Google and the AI tools can read the hierarchy.
Does a niche manufacturer really need that many pages? Yes. We work with a plastics converter that is about as niche as it gets, and that site runs to several hundred pages because each material, method and application has its own answer. Niche means specific, not small.
Three more pieces belong here. Datasheet content goes on the page as real text, with the PDF still offered as a download. Every capability page carries plain-language FAQs, because AI engines draw heavily on them, whatever Google says about snippets. And schema on every page tells the engines you are a manufacturer, not a distributor and not an information site. This is the content strategy that gets a client cited instead of listed.
OUR PROCESS
What does Vertical Web do for manufacturers, and in what order?
We follow the same order on every industrial client account, because the order is the strategy.
- Map the business against the competitors. A mind map of every capability, material, process and application you sell, laid against the sites that already rank. The gaps become pages.
- Fix the words. We settle the exact terms buyers use for each page.
- Build the silos. Capability pages, material pages and application pages, linked so the hierarchy is clear. New content gets built by the web design team that sits 10 feet from the SEO team.
- Make the RFQ the conversion. Every page ends in a quote request for the drawing, material, quantity and deadline, built with our conversion optimization.
- Claim the local footprint anyway. Your buyers are national, but your Google Business Profile still verifies the business is real. We set it up correctly, variable hours included, as part of local SEO.
- Test paid search on the highest-intent terms. A tight campaign on exact material and process searches tells us within weeks what a quote costs. Our PPC management team reports it in quotes, not clicks.
- Report on RFQs and sales. Monthly, in plain numbers, with marketing automation carrying the follow-up between reports.
COST AND ROI
How much does manufacturing digital marketing cost, and how do you measure sales ROI?
There is no acceptable cost per click for a manufacturer, because every client is different. A resin manufacturer sees numbers on a keyword report that would never pencil out for a retailer, and it does not matter, because those few searches convert at a rate a retailer never sees. So we skip the industry benchmark. We start with what one won job is worth, how many quotes it takes to win one, and work backward to what a quote can cost.
Long sales cycles make this harder, not impossible. A quote requested in March may ship in September, so we tag every RFQ to the page and search that produced it and report the revenue when it lands.
We manage more than $1,000,000 a year in paid search, so we know what a lead costs in most categories before we start. If the math does not work for a term, we will say so and tell you where the budget should go instead. That candor costs less than 6 months of the wrong campaign, and it is where the value of an experienced agency shows up first.
WHY VERTICAL WEB
Why hire Vertical Web as your manufacturing marketing agency?
Hire the people other marketers learn from. Beth Guide has taught SEO since 2003 for the SBA, the University of Houston SBDC, Lone Star College and HCC, and she is the technology expert Fox 26 calls. The strategy on this page is the one she teaches in those rooms.
One team, one phone number. Hosting, design, development, content and SEO are all in-house. When a material page needs a schema fix, a new form and 400 words of content, one team does all 3 that week. No vendor pointing at another vendor.
Staying power matters to a buyer with a 9-month cycle. We opened in 1998, the original 1998 client is still with us, and we are a Certified Google Partner with a 4.9 Google rating and First Place triple honors in Best of West Houston 2025.
And we will talk you out of the wrong purchase. See the other industries we serve, including oil and gas marketing, where the same long-cycle, spec-driven buyer shows up.
Questions
Manufacturing marketing agency: common questions
Yes, but for a different reason than a dentist does. Your Google Business Profile proves to Google and to a buyer that the business is a real place with real hours. It will not be your main lead source. It is the trust layer under the capability pages that are.
More than most manufacturers expect. Each capability, material, process and application needs its own page so it can be found for its own search. A niche client of ours runs several hundred pages. We agree to a small site only for a hyper-niche product with one buyer type.
It is the most common problem we see on industrial sites. Google reads PDFs poorly and AI tools read them worse. We keep the PDF as a download and put the properties and tolerances on the page as real text.
Both, if the budget allows. A show runs 2 or 3 times a year and collects names. Search runs every day and reaches the buyer the moment they have a spec problem.
It depends on the state of the site and how competitive your terms are, so we do not promise a date. Structure fixes and new content usually move first, and a small paid campaign can produce quotes while the SEO builds.
For anything that gets specified, yes. Buyers ask ChatGPT and the other AI tools to shortlist suppliers who can run a material or hold a tolerance. Those answers draw on well-structured pages, plain-language FAQs and schema, which is what we build.
