Homepage SEO Check: See What Google and the AI Engines See in Two Minutes
Most of what decides whether a business gets found is visible on the homepage, and most of it is wrong on the sites that call us. Send the address and we run the seven checks below against it with the same scanner we use on client pages. You see the problems and the score. The fixes are the part we do for a living.

What the check looks at
What our free website audit tool checks: seven things a homepage must get right
1. Title tag
Does it say what you sell and where, or is it your business name and the word Home?
2. Heading structure
One H1 that names the service. H2s that describe sections, not slogans.
3. Navigation words
Labels Google can index and dropdowns it can crawl, or Services and Solutions with nothing behind them.
4. Schema
Organization or local business, service, FAQ. Present, valid and matching the page.
5. Speed and Core Web Vitals
Mobile load, interaction and layout shift measured, not guessed.
6. Mobile rendering
What the page looks like on the phone most of your visitors use.
7. AI readability
Can an answer engine tell what this business is, where it is, and what it does? Or does it see Welcome To Our Website?
The score
Content score and rankability against the top ten results for your service and city, the same number we hold our own pages to.

What you get back
The problems, the score, and no milk given away
The report names what is wrong with the homepage in plain English and gives it a score. It does not include the rewritten title tag, the new heading outline or the schema, because those are the work, and the work is what we sell. If the score is fine, we tell you that and the report is the end of it. If it is not, the full website audit is the next step and it is also free.
The checks come from what we teach at the Internet Marketing Clinic and from 28 years of reading sites for Houston businesses. The three mistakes we see most often, a title tag that is the business name, a navigation with no words, and no page connections, are the same three that break rankings after a redesign, which is why SEO repair is our most requested service.
How the SEO checker works
How does this homepage SEO checker work, and what is an SEO score?
You send the address. Our SEO checker loads your homepage the way a search engine does, reads the title tag, meta description, headings, navigation, structured data and page content, then measures speed and mobile performance. It compares what it finds against the pages that already rank in Google search for your service and city.
The overall SEO score is a single number that sums up how well your page matches what Google rewards for that search. A low score does not mean your business is bad. It means the page is not giving the search engine or the AI engines enough to work with. Each issue in the report is ranked, so the critical issue comes first and the small stuff comes last.
You do not need any technical knowledge to read it. Every issue is written in plain English, with a short note on its impact on traffic, visibility or conversion. If you want the background, Beth covers the same checks in our class on auditing website basics.
Can ChatGPT do an SEO audit? It can describe one, and it can spot a missing meta tag if you paste in the code. It cannot see how your page compares to the live results, it does not measure speed, and it often invents problems that are not there. Use AI for ideas, and use a real checker for the data.
A low score on a site that used to rank usually means something was broken in a redesign, a migration or a change of SEO company. Start with how to tell if your SEO company is delivering results or, if you switched already, why rankings drop after switching SEO companies.
After the report
How do I improve my SEO score after the homepage check?
Start with the critical issues. In most reports, three changes make the biggest improvement: a title tag that names what you sell and where, one H1 that matches it, and navigation words that link to your most important page for each service. Those are small edits with a large impact on how Google ranking decisions get made.
Next, fix the technical issues. Broken links, slow images, missing structured data and indexing problems hold back pages that would otherwise rank. Some of these need a developer. Our technical SEO guide explains which ones you can handle on your own platform and which ones you should hand off.
Then look at the content. A homepage that says Welcome To Our Website gives a user and an AI engine nothing to repeat. Say who you serve, what you do and why someone should call, and follow best practice for headings so each section describes itself. Better user experience usually brings a better conversion rate along with it.
The homepage check is a starting point, not the whole job. Every page on your site has its own score. When the homepage report shows a pattern, the full free website audit checks every page and gives you the plan and the price. If the problems run deeper, our SEO repair service fixes them in-house.
Questions
Homepage check FAQ
Yes. You get the score and the list of problems. If you want the fixes, that is a conversation and a published price.
The homepage only. The full audit, which covers every page, is also free and is the next step if the homepage score is low.
You get the report. A person from Vertical Web follows up once. That is it.
The scan takes minutes. We review it before it goes out, so expect the report the same or next business day.
You can send any address. We will tell you what their homepage does well, which is often the most useful part.
The check works on any site. The score usually explains why those platforms are a ceiling, and the report says so plainly.
Send the address through the form above and we run it through the same scanner we use on client pages. You can also look at the title tag, headings and meta description yourself in your browser, but the checker compares them against the pages that rank for your search.
It can explain what an audit covers, but it cannot compare your page to today’s search results or measure speed, and it can report issues that are not real. Use a dedicated SEO checker for the data, then use AI for writing ideas if you like.
No. The report is written in plain English and ranks each issue by impact. If something needs a developer, the report says so.
The report is sent to the email address you enter in the form, so you can keep it, print it or share it with your web designer.
Want the whole site checked, not just the homepage?
Request the free website audit and we will send the full report with the plan and the price.
