OIL, GAS AND ENERGY MARKETING

Oil and Gas Marketing That Gets You on the Vendor List

Procurement and engineering teams search for oilfield services, equipment and energy partners long before they call anyone. We build the marketing strategy, the pages, the search presence and the follow-up that put your company in front of them, from the Energy Corridor to every basin you serve.

A good oil and gas marketing strategy does one thing: when an engineer at a national operator needs what you do, your company is one of the 3 or 4 names that come up. Not your competitor in Midland. You.

Vertical Web has built and marketed websites from Houston since 1998. We handle the whole job in-house, from oil and gas website design to the SEO services and the account based marketing, advertising and follow-up campaigns that turn a search into a bid request.

THE OUTCOME

What does winning look like for an oilfield services or energy company?

It looks like a request for quote from a procurement team you have never met. It looks like a national operator finding your frac tank rentals, your valve repair shop or your solar crew because they searched for it, not because someone on staff knew you. That is the outcome the strategy has to produce.

We have heard the same pushback for 20 years: this is a relationship business. It is. But anyone under 35 who needs your product goes to the internet before they ask around. Procurement teams across the United States build a short list from search results, AI answers and LinkedIn before a single call is made. Your job is to be on that list, in every market you sell into.

HOW BUYERS SEARCH

How do procurement and engineering teams find oil and gas vendors today?

Three ways, and you need all three. First, Google. An engineer types the exact service, often with a place attached: “hydrostatic testing Permian Basin” or “pipe coating services Texas.” These terms get few searches a month. That is fine. We work with a niche manufacturer whose terms never look impressive on a volume report, and the conversion rate on them is extremely high. National search engine optimization for energy is built on terms like these.

Second, AI engines. Buyers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to name vendors, and Google’s AI mode answers by pulling from the websites it trusts. The way in is the groundwork we have taught for years: clear pages, correct structure, schema and real authority signals. Our AI search optimization work is built around that.

Third, LinkedIn. LinkedIn is social media, and it is the only social media platform that matters for most energy companies. If you sell to other businesses, your audience is there, not on Facebook. Buyers from Dallas to Denver check your company page and your people’s profiles before they trust a proposal.

WHAT IT INCLUDES

What does an oil and gas marketing strategy include today?

More than a logo and a booth. The oil and gas industry has changed how it buys, and a complete marketing strategy now covers 7 pieces that have to work together.

  • Brand and awareness. Before a buyer trusts you, they have to know you exist. A clear name, a clear statement of what you do and which products you make, and the same message on every platform you use.
  • Search engine optimization and AI search. The pages that get you found when an engineer in Dallas, Midland or Pittsburgh types the exact service or product, and the structure that lets ChatGPT and Google’s AI mode cite you as the answer.
  • LinkedIn and account based marketing (ABM). ABM means picking the named operators, EPCs and midstream companies you want and marketing to the people inside them: the engineers, the procurement leads and the project managers. We build content, social media posts and outreach aimed at those accounts, so the right people see your expertise before the next bid cycle. ABM is how a 40 person oilfield services company competes for national accounts.
  • Email and webinars. A monthly email and a quarterly technical webinar keep communication open through an 18 month cycle without awkward check-in calls. We have run our own monthly class since 2003 for the same reason: it builds trust at scale.
  • Conferences and trade shows versus search. Shows still matter, but the badge scan is only the start. Every contact goes home and searches for you. If the website does not back up the handshake, the opportunity dies there.
  • Relationships and trust. Marketing does not replace relationships. It scales them. Your experience, your safety record and your people, visible online, let a buyer who has never met you extend the trust your long-time customers already do.
  • Advertising. Google Ads and LinkedIn ads for the few terms and ABM audiences where the contract value justifies the cost. Advertising amplifies a strategy that already works. It cannot rescue one that does not.

The order matters. Get found first, prove the value second, and only then spend money on reach. Companies that start with advertising usually pay to send buyers to a website that loses them.

What should you look for in a digital marketing agency for oil and gas? Experience with technical, long cycle B2B sales, not consumer brands. One team that builds the website, writes the capability pages, runs the search engine optimization, the ABM and the advertising, and shows you the numbers, so nobody hands off blame. Vertical Web is a digital agency with every one of those services in-house, in business through every energy cycle since 1998.

OUR PROCESS

How does a digital marketing agency build an oil and gas marketing strategy?

The strategy starts with the keyword list, the most important list your company will ever make. We pull the terms your buyers use and flag the words too vague to rank on. “Oil and gas consulting” tells Google almost nothing. “Produced water treatment consulting” tells it everything.

Then we fix the structure, which is the technical side of search engine optimization. Beth calls it the most important leg of the stool, and most energy sites fail it. We map your site so every service, product line and region has its own page, linked together in silos. A site built this way can earn AI listings within 1 to 2 months of launch.

Next comes content: capability pages, safety and compliance pages, coverage pages for each basin, and an FAQ with FAQ schema on every page. Then the follow-up: email marketing, LinkedIn and ABM outreach to your named accounts, to stay in front of buyers through a cycle that can run 6 to 18 months. Advertising comes last, and only where the numbers work.

STRUCTURE

Why do energy companies need separate pages for every service and basin?

Because a buyer searches for one thing at a time, and Google ranks one page at a time. A single “Services” page listing 14 products cannot rank for any of them. The engineer searching for wellhead maintenance needs a wellhead maintenance page.

The same rule applies to geography. If you work the Permian, the Eagle Ford, the Haynesville and the Gulf Coast, each one deserves a real page: what you do there, where your yard is, which operators are in the area, and a clickable map. A thin page with the city name swapped out does not work. This is what a national strategy needs when your market runs from the Gulf Coast to North Dakota.

Each region page links to your service pages, and the service pages link back. That interlinking passes authority through the site and shows Google the hierarchy, the same approach behind our manufacturing marketing work.

MISTAKES WE SEE

What are the biggest oil and gas marketing strategy mistakes?

  • A homepage that never says what you do. We review sites that read “transforming visions into reality” and never name a service. A visitor should know in 5 seconds whether you sell solar panels or facility support. So should Google.
  • Vague navigation. “Solutions” and “Vendor Services” are not search terms. Your top menu should carry your 3 biggest product or service keywords.
  • Changing URLs during a redesign. Companies lose years of backlinks when a new designer renames every page. We never change a URL that is ranking.
  • Buying advertising before the strategy exists. Ads and social media posts with no plan for which accounts you want, or what the page should do once they land, is awareness with nothing to catch it.

If your site has 2 or more of these, start with our guide to common website problems, then let us look at it.

COST AND ROI

How much does an oil and gas marketing strategy cost in Houston?

We do not post a price list, because a company with 3 service lines and one yard needs a different strategy than an equipment maker selling 6 product lines into 6 basins, and an ABM program aimed at 20 named accounts costs differently than national search engine optimization. Here is how we think about the spend.

Cost per click is our first clue. A term that costs $6 or more per click in Google Ads is competitive, hard to rank on and worth owning organically. A term at 20 cents is usually too vague to carry buyer intent.

We manage more than $1M a year in PPC, so we know what a lead costs. In energy, one contract can cover years of marketing, so we judge the spend against bid requests and qualified calls, not clicks. That is true whether your market is the Energy Corridor, Dallas or anywhere in the United States.

MEASUREMENT

How do you measure an oil and gas marketing strategy?

Start with the goal, in plain terms. More bid requests from Permian operators. Two new natural gas midstream accounts this year. Getting on the approved vendor list at 3 named companies. A goal you can say in one sentence is one you can measure.

Then separate outcomes from activity. Outcomes are the contracts, the RFQs and the qualified calls. Activity is what leads there: rankings on your target terms, which pages buyers read, which emails get opened, which of your ABM accounts visited your capability pages this week. Activity shows the strategy is working before the outcomes do, which matters when one sale takes a year.

The insight comes from 3 places. Google Search Console shows which terms bring buyers in. Google Analytics shows what they read and where they leave. Call tracking and form tracking tie each quote request to the page and channel that produced it. Together they show which product pages pull their weight and which basins are not producing.

Over a long cycle, success looks like this. In the first 90 days, the structure is fixed, awareness builds on LinkedIn and the target terms start moving. By month 6, the capability and region pages rank, the AI engines begin to cite the company, and the first unsolicited quote requests arrive from buyers you have never met. From there, growth compounds. We report every month and tell you plainly when something is not moving.

TRUST

How do reviews and reputation work for a B2B energy company?

Differently than for a restaurant, but they still matter. A procurement team vetting 4 vendors will Google each one. Reviews from operators and contractors, a clean news footprint and active social media, which for an energy company means LinkedIn, all shorten the vetting.

Your office in the Energy Corridor, your yard outside Odessa and your shop in Conroe each need a verified Google Business Profile with the right categories and service area. That is standard local SEO work, and it feeds the AI engines, which pull from Google’s local data when a question has a place in it.

We also build authority around your people, because the engines look at who is behind a company before they cite it. An author box on your technical articles, a real bio and a matching LinkedIn profile make your lead engineer’s expertise a source they trust. Our reputation management program handles the reviews, listings and responses.

WHY VERTICAL WEB

Why should an energy company choose Vertical Web?

Hire the people other marketers learn from. Beth Guide has taught search engine optimization and digital marketing strategy since 2003 for the SBA, the University of Houston SBDC, Lone Star College and HCC, and appears as a technology expert on Fox 26.

One accountable team. Hosting, design, development, content, search engine optimization and advertising are all in-house. No hosting vendor pointing at a design vendor pointing at an SEO vendor.

Staying power. We opened in 1998 and our original 1998 client is still with us. We are a Certified Google Partner with a 4.9 Google rating and First Place triple honors in Best of West Houston 2025. Energy runs in cycles, and that experience matters.

Candor. We will tell you when advertising is the wrong buy, when ABM to 15 named accounts will beat a national campaign, and when the problem is your sales follow-up, not your website. Start with a free website analysis and we will show you where the opportunity is.

Questions

Oil and gas marketing: common questions

Yes, often better than in local industries, because the terms are specific and the online competition across the United States is thin. A procurement team in Denver or Oklahoma City searching for a specialized product finds whoever has the clearest page for it. Low volume, high intent, high contract value.

Marketing does the early vetting for you. Buyers read your capability, safety and coverage pages before they call, so the first meeting starts further along. Email, LinkedIn and ABM then keep you in front of the buyer, so you are the name they remember when the budget opens.

Sometimes. We look at cost per click and buyer intent for each term before we spend a dollar. Some energy terms are worth buying because the contract value justifies the click cost. Others are too vague to convert, and we will tell you to keep the money or put it into ABM.

The AI engines pull from websites with clear structure, specific pages, schema markup and visible expertise. We build those signals into your site and your people’s profiles. Sites structured this way have earned AI listings within 1 to 2 months of launch.

ABM means you pick the named operators, EPCs and midstream companies you want as customers and market to the people inside them, instead of marketing to everyone. For an energy company that is LinkedIn content and advertising aimed at those accounts, email to the right contacts, and capability pages written to their specifications. It builds awareness and trust with the accounts that matter most, and we pair it with national search engine optimization so the buyers you did not name can find you too.

If you are targeting buyers inside another country, you generally need a domain or section built for that country, not just a translated page. Serving Spanish-speaking buyers in the United States is a different job from serving the Mexican market. We help you sort out which one you need first.
