Your best lead is the one nobody else got. A homeowner in Katy who typed a question about flood coverage, read your answer, and asked you for a quote. No lead vendor, no bidding war, no race to call first. Good insurance agency marketing builds a steady supply of those requests and then keeps the household on the books at renewal. Our search engine optimization for insurance agencies starts with the lines you write and the places you are licensed, not with a generic template.
Many agencies still think nobody visits an insurance agent’s website. Beth hears it in class all the time. The truth is every one of your prospects searches before they call, and many now ask ChatGPT or Gemini what a coverage means before they ever talk to an agent. If your site cannot answer them, someone else’s will.
THE OUTCOME
What should insurance agency marketing actually produce?
3 things, in this order. Quote requests and phone calls from people inside your licensed territory. Renewals that stay put. More lines per household, so the auto client also gives you the home, the umbrella and the boat.
Traffic is not on that list. Neither are likes. A page that ranks but never produces a quote request is a different problem, and we treat it as one. Every page we write for an agency has a job: get the visitor to ask you for a quote or call your office.
That also means your website cannot be a brochure with a phone number on it. A brochure gets found by people who already know your name. Search brings you the people who do not, and those are the households you are trying to win.
HOW CLIENTS SHOP
How do people shop for an insurance agent today?
It depends on the line. Google treats personal auto and home as local purchases. Most people buy car insurance close to where they live, so a search for “insurance agent near me” or “auto insurance Sugar Land” shows the map pack first. Your Google Business Profile, your reviews and your city pages decide whether you show up there, which is why local SEO sits at the center of any personal lines plan.
Life, long-term care, Medicare and commercial specialty lines work differently. Buyers search the topic, not the town, and Google looks for expertise rather than distance. Those pages have to read like the work of a specialist.
Commercial lines buyers search by their own industry. A roofer types “roofing contractor insurance.” A restaurant owner types “restaurant liability insurance.” If you write a lot of one kind of business, give that industry its own page that speaks its language, names the coverages it needs and explains the certificates and contract requirements those owners deal with every week.
Then there are the AI engines. A driver asks Perplexity whether they should drop personal injury protection. A business owner asks ChatGPT what a commercial umbrella covers. The agencies that wrote clear, specific answers get cited. Our AI search optimization work makes sure your answers are the ones the engines can read and quote.

SITE STRUCTURE
Should my agency have a separate page for every line of insurance?
Yes. Beth has built insurance sites this way for years, and the reason is simple: Google ranks pages, not agencies. One “Our Products” page cannot rank for auto, home, flood, renters and commercial at the same time.
- Split by family. If you write both, group property and casualty (auto, home, flood, renters, motorcycle, boat) apart from life and health. A P&C only agency might split auto and fire instead.
- Build each section out. Your auto page should lead to individual coverage pages: collision, comprehensive, bodily injury, personal injury protection and uninsured motorist. Those pages link to each other and back up to auto, with a related topics menu at the bottom.
- Keep them evergreen. These are not blog posts. You do not need 50 articles on car insurance. Five strong coverage pages often do more.
- Add the cities you serve. One page per office and per city you actively write in, each with real local detail.
When a section is supported this way, the main line page gets pushed up. The homepage menu then carries every line you sell, so nobody has to guess where to click. If your current site cannot hold that structure, our insurance website design team builds it with the marketing already planned in.
LICENSED IN OTHER STATES
How do I get insurance leads in other states where I am licensed?
This is one of the most common agency questions in Beth’s classes. The answer depends on the line.
Your local agency site is anchored to your office. Google sees it, correctly, as a local business. If you bolt Medicare, long-term care or senior health pages onto it, Google tends to read those as local to your town too. That pins a multi-state opportunity to one town.
So we give you 2 options. First, silo the site carefully so the broader lines are clearly not tied to your office city. Second, and often stronger, put the multi-state lines on their own site that speaks as a specialist. Beth built a standalone long-term care site for an agent years ago and it outperformed the same pages on the local agency site by a wide margin.
We will tell you which path fits your book. That is a strategy conversation, not a default.

AI ANSWERS
How do I get my agency into AI answers about coverage questions?
Write the answer better than anyone else, and make it sell. Take a question Texas drivers ask all the time: should I drop PIP if I have health insurance? A good page explains what PIP is, whether it is required or optional in Texas, how it works with medical coverage, and what limits make sense.
The required versus optional paragraph is where you earn the policy. That is your chance, as the licensed professional, to make the case for the coverage. A page that only defines terms gets read and forgotten. A page that explains why it matters gets a quote request.
We use AI tools to outline what a complete answer should cover. We do not paste AI text onto your site. The engines already have the generic version. They cite the page that adds something new, written with the local and state detail only an agent knows.
MISTAKES WE SEE
Why are my purchased insurance leads not closing?
Because the same person filled out one form and may have heard from several agencies before you even dialed. Shared leads are often sold to more than one agent, so you are paying to start a price war. And in our experience, paid leads close at a lower rate than people who found you organically and read your page first.
Other mistakes we see over and over:
- No one answers the phone. Pull your call records. Missed calls after 5 o’clock are often the leak, not the marketing.
- Reviews that say nothing. “Great agent, very nice” does not tell Google you write commercial auto. Ask clients to mention the coverage you helped with.
- Ignoring the book you have. Renewal reminders and cross-sell offers through email marketing and text message campaigns protect revenue you already earned.
- Ads that break carrier rules. Captive and appointed agents often have carrier brand and co-op guidelines for ads and logos. We check yours before anything runs.
If your site has bigger problems, like slow pages or old penalties, our website repair and recovery work fixes the foundation first.
COST AND ROI
How much does insurance agency marketing cost?
It depends on what you write and where. The number moves with:
- How many lines you want to rank for, and how many coverage pages each needs
- How many offices, cities and states you serve
- How crowded your market is for searches like “insurance agent near me”
- Whether you want paid search running while organic rankings build
- How fast you want to move
We do not quote from a menu. We start with a free website analysis, look at your lines and territory, and put the scope in writing. Then measure it the way you measure your book: quote requests, bound policies, retention and lines per household. Organic leads keep coming after the work is done. Bought leads stop the day you stop paying.
Retention belongs in the math too. Keeping a household you already wrote takes far less effort than winning a new one, so the renewal and cross-sell campaigns often pay for themselves before new business does.
WHY VERTICAL WEB
Why should an insurance agency choose Vertical Web?
You hire the people other marketers learn from. Beth Guide has taught SEO since 2003 for the SBA, the University of Houston SBDC, Lone Star College and HCC, and she is a Fox 26 technology expert. The coverage page structure on this page is the same method she teaches.
One accountable team. Hosting, design, development, content and SEO all happen in-house. When your quote form breaks, nobody points at another vendor.
Staying power you can check. We have been in business since 1998. Our original 1998 client is still with us. We are a Certified Google Partner with a 4.9 Google rating and First Place triple honors in Best of West Houston 2025.
Candor. We manage more than $1M a year in PPC, so we know what a lead really costs. If buying more leads is the wrong move for your agency, we will tell you. Beth also answers agency questions live at the Internet Marketing Clinic. Agencies that also offer planning services can compare notes with our financial services marketing page.
Questions
Insurance agency marketing: common questions
Yes. Referrals check you out online before they call, and prospects who do not know you yet find agencies through search and AI engines. A site that answers coverage questions turns both groups into quote requests.
Yes. Many carriers have brand and co-op guidelines for agent websites and ads. We work inside those rules, focus on your local presence and reviews, and check anything carrier related before it goes live.
Sometimes, but often not. A local agency site tends to signal that everything on it is local. For multi-state lines, a careful silo or a separate specialist site usually performs better, and we will recommend the path that fits your book.
Start with a complete Google Business Profile with accurate categories and hours, a steady flow of reviews that name the coverage, and city pages on your site that match your profile. Location still matters, so each office needs its own profile.
We write evergreen pages for the lines and coverages that matter most to your book first. Each section gets enough support to rank, then we add depth over time instead of publishing dozens of thin articles.
It depends on your market, your current site and how many lines we build out. We do not promise timelines or rankings. We do report monthly on rankings, calls and quote requests so you can see the trend.
