THE CANDID ANSWER
What is WordPress hosting, really?
Here is something most hosts will not tell you: WordPress hosting is web hosting. Beth Guide points this out in class. The term caught on because it is what people search for, not because it is a different product. What separates a good WordPress host from a bad one is how the server is set up and who answers when WordPress breaks.
A good WordPress host tunes the server for the way WordPress actually works. That means server-side caching, current PHP, a database configured for WordPress, security rules aimed at WordPress attacks, and a team that can read a plugin conflict. A bad one installs WordPress on a crowded server and leaves you to it.
There is also no hosting included with WordPress.org. The software is free, but you need your own hosting company to run it. Beth’s advice is to look at what plugins and licensing a host provides, because you can get a bare bones version of WordPress anywhere, and by the time you buy the plugins you need one at a time, the bargain is gone. If you are comparing every type of plan we offer, start on our web hosting services page.
SPEED
How does WordPress hosting improve Core Web Vitals?
Speed is the name of the game. Your visitors do not have time to wait for a page to load, and Google measures how long they wait. We built our hosting to succeed for the end user and for Google, and we do not sacrifice speed for security.
Server-side caching
Pages are served from a ready-made copy instead of being rebuilt on every visit. Beth calls a caching server a must for WordPress.
Fast server response
Every Core Web Vitals score starts with how quickly the server answers. A tuned, uncrowded server answers fast.
Speed modules standard
Google speed modules and image libraries installed as standard, not as an upgrade.
Database tuned for WordPress
WordPress leans on its database for every page. We configure it for that load.
Plugin discipline
Every plugin adds work for the server. We help you keep only the ones that earn their place.
No throttling
We do not cap bandwidth or slow a site down because it got busy, which is when you need speed most.
Learn how these settings connect to rankings in how SEO and web hosting are interconnected, and see Beth’s take on pairing WordPress with server caching in building for speed: WordPress, the web host and cache.
SECURITY
How do you keep a WordPress site from getting hacked?
WordPress runs a large share of the web, which makes it the most attacked platform on the web. Bots try WordPress logins on every site every day. Most small business hacks we clean up have the same causes: outdated plugins, weak admin passwords and hosting with no protection in front of the site.
We are committed to a secure WordPress hosting environment, and every customer gets state of the art cyber security and intrusion protection at no extra charge. Our hosting also includes free patching services to keep WordPress up to date, plus off-site backups for disaster recovery.
Beth makes a point about backups that saves clients every year: a backup stored on the same server as your website is not a real backup. If the server fails or the site is hacked, that copy can go with it. Ours are stored off the server. Our guide on what full service web hosting should include for security lists the minimum any WordPress host should provide.
THE CASE FOR VERTICAL WEB ON WORDPRESS HOSTING
WordPress hosting from a team that builds WordPress sites
We teach WordPress
Beth Guide teaches WordPress, hosting and SEO for the SBA, the University of Houston SBDC, Lone Star College and HCC.
We build on it daily
Our designers build on WordPress with Astra and Elementor Pro, so plugin conflicts and theme quirks are familiar ground.
Here since 1998
One in-house team for hosting, design and SEO, and the client who hired us in 1998 is still with us.
SUPPORT
WordPress support regardless of your experience level
We know our clients are business owners, not web designers. No matter your experience level, we have your back. Call us when a plugin update breaks a page, when a form stops sending or when you simply cannot find the setting you need.
Because our support team works alongside our Houston web design team, a WordPress question gets answered by someone who builds WordPress sites. If your site needs more than a fix, our website redesign service rebuilds it on a faster foundation without changing the URLs that already rank.

PLANS
Select the WordPress plan that fits your business
Basic Hosting, starting at $7.95 monthly. For a small WordPress site with a few pages and one email account: 5GB of disk space, unmetered bandwidth and a free domain with an annual plan.
Business Hosting, starting at $13.95 monthly. Our usual pick for WordPress. It adds more room and email accounts, customizable spam filtering and free WordPress licenses such as Akismet and iThemes security.
VPN and Cloud, starting at $44.95 monthly. For WooCommerce stores, membership sites and large sites: high availability, a dedicated IP, dedicated disk space and firewall and VPN tunnels.
Every plan lists a 30 day free trial. Compare full feature lists on our web hosting plans page, or see managed options on managed WordPress hosting.
FREE HOSTING
Is free web hosting with WordPress installed worth it?
We see the search all the time: free web hosting with WordPress installed. For a practice site or a hobby blog, a free plan can be a fine place to learn. For a business, it costs more than it saves.
Free plans make their money somewhere. Usually it is ads on your site, strict limits that push you to upgrade, or a subdomain instead of your own address. They rarely include backups, they almost never include real support, and you cannot change the server settings that decide your speed scores.
The bigger cost is control. If the site is how customers find you, it should live on hosting you pay for, under a domain you own, with someone to call. That is a few dollars a month. Losing a week of leads costs more.
SIZING
How much space do you need to host WordPress?
Less than you might think. A WordPress install itself is small. A typical small business site with 20 to 50 pages, optimized images and a handful of plugins fits in a few gigabytes, backups included.
What grows is everything around it. Uploaded photos that were never resized can multiply the size of a site. Email accounts with years of attachments often take more space than the website. Store catalogs and member areas grow every month.
So size the plan by what the site does, not by how many gigabytes it has today. Memory, caching and server speed decide how the site feels to visitors. Disk space just decides how long until you need to clean up.
The three metrics
What are Core Web Vitals? LCP, INP and CLS explained for WordPress owners
Core Web Vitals are three metrics Google uses to measure how a page feels to a real user. Each one covers a different part of the user experience.
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures loading: how long it takes for the biggest piece of content, usually the hero image or headline, to paint on the screen.
- Interaction to Next Paint (INP) measures responsiveness: how long the page takes to react after a user taps a button or a menu. INP replaced First Input Delay (FID) as the official metric, because FID only measured the first interaction.
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) measures visual stability: how much the content jumps around while the page loads.
Google reports these metrics from real Chrome browser data, and you can see your scores in PageSpeed Insights and in the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console. A page passes when all three are in the “good” range for most visitors. Behind them sits Time to First Byte (TTFB), the milliseconds the server takes to start sending the HTML. TTFB is not one of the three Core Web Vitals, but it is the head start every other metric depends on, and it is the one your web hosting controls most directly.
Server first, then the page
How WordPress web hosting affects LCP and TTFB
Every Core Web Vitals score starts on the server. If the server takes a long time to answer, the browser has nothing to paint, and LCP fails before the page ever gets a chance. That is why we tune our WordPress web hosting for server response first.
The biggest lever is caching. Without a cache, WordPress builds every page from PHP and database queries on every request. With server-side page caching, the server hands over a finished HTML copy in a fraction of the time. Add object caching for the database and a content delivery network (CDN) for images, scripts and fonts, and the content reaches the visitor faster wherever they are.
Load matters too. When Google crawls a site with thousands of pages, it pulls a lot of pages in a short burst, and a crowded shared server slows down for everyone on it, including your real customers. Beth Guide has made this point in class for years: if your host slows Google down, your rankings feel it. We size our servers so a busy crawl or a busy sale does not slow your pages. If you need more headroom, our managed cloud hosting gives a growing site its own resources.
What the theme and plugins do
How do you fix a failing CLS or INP score on a WordPress site?
Hosting fixes the server. CLS and INP are mostly about what happens in the browser, which means the theme, the page builder, the plugins and the scripts they load.
For CLS, the usual causes are images without set dimensions, web fonts that swap in late and change the line length, and banners or ads that push content down after it appears. The fixes: give every image a width and height, preload the main font file and use font-display settings, and reserve space for anything that loads late. If your CLS score is failing but you cannot see anything move, the shift may be happening below the fold or only on a slow phone, so test on a real mobile device.
For INP, the cause is almost always too much JavaScript. Every slider, chat widget, tracking tag and plugin script competes for the browser’s attention when a user taps. Deferring non-critical scripts is generally safe and helps, but test the menu, the forms and the checkout after you do it, because a deferred script can break an interaction that depends on it.
We build our own sites on Astra and Elementor Pro, a lightweight theme and a page builder we know how to keep lean. Images go up as WebP, unused plugins come out, and every page is tested before launch. That same discipline is part of our WordPress web design work.
How long it takes
Do Core Web Vitals affect Google rankings, and how long does a fix take to show?
Yes, Core Web Vitals are part of Google’s page experience signals. They are not the biggest ranking factor, content and relevance still come first, but between two pages that answer the question equally well, the faster, more stable page has the edge. Beth’s view is blunt: you can do everything else right, and if the site is slow you will not get very far.
Fixes take time to appear. PageSpeed Insights shows a lab test right away, so you can confirm a change worked the same day. The field data in Search Console is based on real visits collected over a rolling period of about a month, so the report updates gradually as new visits replace old ones. Once you fix the issue, use the validate fix button in Search Console and keep watching.
WooCommerce stores need extra attention, because cart and checkout pages cannot be fully cached and they carry more scripts than a brochure page. If you run a store, ask any host how they handle uncached WooCommerce pages before you sign up. QUESTIONS
WordPress hosting questions we hear
WordPress hosting is web hosting set up for the way WordPress works: the right PHP and database settings, server-side caching, automatic installs, and support from people who know WordPress. Any decent host can run WordPress. A WordPress host runs it well.
Yes. WordPress.org is free software, but there is no hosting with it. You need your own hosting company to run it. WordPress.com is a different, hosted service with its own limits.
A typical small business WordPress site uses a few gigabytes, including backups. Images, plugins and email add up, so a plan with room to grow is wise. Speed, memory and caching matter more than raw disk space.
For a test site, maybe. For a business, no. Free plans usually mean ads, tight limits, no backups and no support, and you cannot control the server settings that decide your Core Web Vitals.
Our hosting includes free patching services to keep WordPress up to date, and our team can manage plugin and theme updates too. We test that the site still works after updates, because an untested update is how forms and layouts break.
Business Hosting, starting at $13.95 a month, is our usual fit for WordPress because it includes free WordPress licenses such as Akismet and iThemes security. Small sites can start on Basic Hosting at $7.95 a month, and busy stores belong on VPN and Cloud, starting at $44.95 a month.
Yes. We migrate WordPress sites for free with every URL preserved, test them on our servers first, and then switch the DNS.
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) for loading, Interaction to Next Paint (INP) for responsiveness and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) for visual stability. Time to First Byte is not one of the three, but a slow server response drags all of them down.
Hosting fixes server response and caching, which is the foundation for LCP. CLS and INP also depend on your theme, page builder, plugins, images and JavaScript, so most sites need work on both.
Usually, for scripts that are not needed right away. Test the menu, forms and checkout after deferring, because some features break if their script loads late.
PageSpeed Insights lab tests change right away. The Search Console field data is based on real visits over a rolling period of about a month, so expect it to improve gradually after the fix.
